In Turkey, the toll system is mixed: it includes state motorways (managed by KGM), private motorways (built under the Build-Operate-Transfer system), and strategic bridges and tunnels. The basis for all settlements is the electronic HGS (Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi) system.

HGV Classification in Turkey

The toll amount depends on the vehicle category (Sınıf). For heavy transport, three classes are critical:

  • Class 3 (3. Sınıf): Vehicles with 3 axles (e.g., rigid trucks, buses).
  • Class 4 (4. Sınıf): Vehicles with 4 or 5 axles (standard tractor-trailer sets).
  • Class 5 (5. Sınıf): Vehicles with 6 or more axles (sets with trailers, oversized loads).

Bridges and Tunnels - 2026 Rates (TRY)

These are the most expensive points on the Turkish map. The rates provided are for a one-way trip, effective as of January 1, 2026.

Note: Heavy goods vehicles are strictly required to use the YSS Bridge (the third bridge). Entering other Bosphorus bridges in Istanbul results in heavy fines.

Main Private Motorways (BOT System)

These are the most modern and expensive road sections, where rates are significantly higher than on state-run roads.

Istanbul - Izmir Motorway (Gebze-Orhangazi-İzmir)

Full transit from the Osmangazi Bridge exit to Izmir.

  • Class 4 (4-5 axles): ~5,405.00 TRY
  • Class 5 (≥6 axles): ~6,805.00 TRY

Northern Marmara Highway (Kuzey Marmara Otoyolu - KMO)

Crucial for transit bypassing central Istanbul. Rates depend on entry/exit points; below is for a major section (e.g., Kurnaköy - Akyazı).

  • Class 4 (4-5 axles): 1,525.00 TRY
  • Class 5 (≥6 axles): 1,910.00 TRY

Ankara - Niğde Motorway

The main corridor to the south of the country.

  • Class 4 (4-5 axles): 1,280.00 TRY
  • Class 5 (≥6 axles): 1,540.00 TRY

State Motorways (KGM)

These sections are significantly cheaper. Sample rates for the full distance in 2026:

SectionClass 4 (4-5 axles)Class 5 (≥6 axles)
Edirne - Istanbul (BG Border - Istanbul)~335.00 TRY~440.00 TRY
Istanbul - Ankara (Anatolian Highway)675.00 TRY811.00 TRY
Izmir - Aydın~145.00 TRY~195.00 TRY
Adana - Şanlıurfa~390.00 TRY~500.00 TRY

HGS System and Payment Rules

In Turkey, cash payments directly at a booth are not available on most new routes.

  • HGS Sticker/Account: Every vehicle must have an HGS sticker linked to an account with a positive balance.
  • Currency: Tolls are deducted in Turkish Lira (TRY). Given the current exchange rate volatility (~53 TRY per 1 EUR in May 2026), it is recommended to maintain a surplus on the HGS account.
  • Payment Deadline: If a vehicle passes a toll point with insufficient funds, you have 15 days to top up the HGS account to allow the system to collect the debt automatically without penalties.

Penalty and Fine Schedule (2026)

Failure to pay within the 15-day grace period results in administrative penalties:

  1. Level 1 Penalty: 1x the toll rate (if paid within 45 days).
  2. Level 2 Penalty: 4x the toll rate (after 45 days).
  3. Restricted Bridge Violation: A truck entering the FSM or July 15 Martyrs Bridge in Istanbul faces a fine of 5,500.00 TRY plus penalty points for the driver.

Transit Cost Summary (Example)

Transit of a 5-axle set (Class 4) from the Bulgarian border (Kapitan Andreevo) to Ankara:

  • Edirne - Istanbul: ~335 TRY
  • Northern Marmara (KMO) + YSS Bridge: ~1,880 TRY
  • Istanbul - Ankara: 675 TRY
  • Total: ~2,890 TRY (approx. €54 - €58 depending on the exact exchange rate).

Discover Our Route Calculator

You already know the rates, but manually calculating costs for a route spanning thousands of kilometers—especially with different motorway systems in Turkey—is a direct path to errors. That is why we provide you with a tool that does it for you.

  • Precision to the cent: Our calculator automatically calculates road tolls, taking into account the unique regulations of each country—from axle count and weight to vehicle dimensions and Euro or CO2 emission classes.
  • The choice is yours: The system proposes several alternative routes. Decide whether you prefer to drive faster or cheaper, seeing the differences in travel time and final toll cost clearly.
  • Your fleet at your fingertips: Save your vehicle profiles in the system. No need to enter parameters every time—simply select a truck, and the calculator adjusts the rates.
  • Real-time cost optimization: Seeing the total cost before departure allows for better freight pricing and avoidance of unprofitable orders.

Test it for free and without obligation. We offer a free trial period so you can see how the calculator handles your most frequent routes. No “catches” or hidden commitments.

FAQ

How does the HGS system for trucks work in Turkey and what is needed before entry?

Settlement is based on the HGS electronic system, so the vehicle must have a correctly configured payment tool and an active account. Lack of preparation leads to transit issues and the risk of fines.

Which infrastructure elements increase transport costs through Turkey the most?

Strategic bridges, tunnels, and selected concession motorways are the most expensive, with rates significantly higher than state roads. In practice, these points represent the largest part of the route cost.

Why is vehicle classification by axle count so important in Turkey?

The tariff system is based on vehicle classes, and transitioning between classes significantly changes the fee amount. Incorrectly assigning a vehicle set easily leads to underestimating trip costs.

What are the most common mistakes made by carriers when traveling through Istanbul?

A frequent problem is failing to account for truck restrictions on selected crossings and choosing the wrong route through the metropolitan area. This can generate extra fees, fines, and major operational delays.

How should TRY currency risk be accounted for when pricing a route to Turkey?

Road and structure costs are settled in Turkish Lira, so the exchange rate should be considered separately in calculations. With high TRY volatility, a safety margin is crucial for maintaining margins.

How to prepare a profitable calculation for a route to Turkey in 2026?

You must sum up the fees for motorways, bridges, tunnels, fuel costs, and travel time, then add a buffer for currency volatility and border traffic. This model best protects against executing unprofitable orders.
