Truck driving bans are national rules that stop heavy vehicles on Sundays, public holidays, selected Saturdays or at night. Europe has no single ban: each country sets its own weight limit, its own hours and its own holiday list.
This page collects the permanent rules for 2027 in 42 countries, each with its own rule table. For five more countries our source check found no national truck driving ban, and we say so in their sections. Day-by-day calendars are in our articles on bans at Easter, around May Day, at Pentecost and Corpus Christi and in the summer.
Rules last checked: 28 October 2026.
The source sits next to each rule.

Truck driving bans in Europe: rules at a glance
- There is no EU-wide ban. Each state decides for itself.
- Limits start at 3.5 t. Most bans cover vehicles over 7.5 t, Poland and Bulgaria over 12 t.
- Sundays and public holidays are the usual ban days. Some countries add summer Saturdays, Friday evenings or a night ban.
- Exemptions usually cover food, animals and combined transport. Conditions and required documents differ by country.
The table lists the countries in the same order as their sections below: 19 with a general ban or a ban on selected roads, 22 with no national weekend or holiday ban, Russia with a carriage ban for EU carriers, and 5 where our source check found no national truck driving ban.

How to read the table: the weight is the permissible maximum weight (GVW) of the vehicle or combination. Hours are local time in the country where the vehicle is.
Is there a single truck driving ban in Europe?
No: the EU sets drivers’ driving and rest times in Regulation (EC) 561/2006, but not the days a truck may run. Each state sets its bans in its own road law.
A national rule applies to every vehicle on that state’s territory. A Polish carrier in Germany follows § 30 StVO exactly like a German one, and a German carrier in Poland follows the Polish regulation.
Driving time and driving bans
These are two separate mechanisms. A ban stops the vehicle, and driving-time rules limit the driver.
A driver’s break does not exempt the truck from a ban, and a ban does not replace rest. If a ban lasts 22 hours, it often makes sense to plan it together with the weekly rest.
Parking before a ban
Motorway parking fills up fast before a long weekend. Plan the stop together with the route, using our guide to secure truck parking in Europe.
What weight limit triggers a truck driving ban?
Limits range from 3.5 t to 12 t, and several countries count a combination with a trailer separately. The table groups countries by permissible maximum weight.
| Weight limit | Countries | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| over 3.5 t | Greece, Liechtenstein, Switzerland | In Greece, police set the limit for listed roads |
| combination with trailer over 3.5 t | Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Switzerland | A lighter vehicle with a trailer can fall under the ban |
| over 7.5 t | Austria, Croatia, Czechia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain | The most common limit in Europe |
| over 12 t | Poland, Bulgaria | Poland excludes buses |
| other limits | Belarus (6 t axle load in heat), North Macedonia (15 t), Ukraine (24 t in heat) | Seasonal bans or bans on selected roads |
The most common mistake is counting only the truck or tractor. In Austria, Czechia and Slovakia the trailer counts too, so a van towing a heavy trailer can fall under the ban.
Vans up to 3.5 t without a trailer are usually outside the bans. They have their own obligations, covered in our article on tachographs in vans.
What are the truck driving ban hours?
Bans fall into a few types. One country can apply several at once.
- Sunday and holiday ban: stops trucks on days off, usually until 22:00.
- Summer ban: adds Saturdays, sometimes Fridays, in July and August.
- Night ban: applies every night, whatever the day of the week.
- Route or sectoral ban: covers listed roads, directions or types of goods.
| Ban type | Typical hours | Where most often |
|---|---|---|
| Sundays and holidays | from 0:00, 6:00, 8:00 or 13:00 to 22:00 | Poland, Austria, Czechia, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia |
| Saturday to Sunday | Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00 | France, Hungary (outside summer) |
| Summer Saturdays | from 7:00-9:00 to 13:00-20:00 | Austria, Czechia, France, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia |
| Summer Fridays | evenings, from 16:00-18:00 to 21:00-22:00 | Poland, Czechia, Italy, North Macedonia |
| Night | 22:00-5:00 | Austria, Tyrol (A12), Liechtenstein, Switzerland |
| Heat | daytime, during a weather warning | Belarus, Moldova, Romania, Ukraine |
A ban ends by the local time of the country where the vehicle is parked. When you cross a border on a ban day, check both countries, because the ban on one side can last longer than on the other.
Truck driving bans by country
Each country has its own section with a rule table. Countries with a ban also get their 2027 holidays, exemptions and fines where we found them. Poland comes first, then the other countries in alphabetical order.
For countries with no national ban, that status comes from trade sources, not from the legal text. The DHL Freight Connections overview also lists Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Baltic states, the UK, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus as having no general truck ban.
- Poland, Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria
- Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany
- Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein
- Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia
- Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain
- Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Vatican City
Poland
Poland’s 2027 truck driving bans come from the regulation on periodic traffic restrictions for certain vehicles (consolidated text, Dz.U. 2023 item 2423, in Polish). They cover vehicles and combinations with a permissible maximum weight over 12 t, except buses, on all roads in the country.
Poland: weight limit and ban hours
| Rule | Vehicles | Hours | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listed holidays | over 12 t GVW, except buses | 8:00-22:00 | § 2 point 1 |
| Day before a holiday | as above | 18:00-22:00 (Easter to 11 November) | § 2 point 2 |
| Summer period | as above | Fridays 18:00-22:00, Saturdays 8:00-14:00, Sundays 8:00-22:00 | § 2 point 3 |
An ordinary Sunday outside the summer is not a ban day. § 2 point 1 bans trucks “w dni ustawowo wolne od pracy:” (on statutory days off) and lists those days in a closed list, letters a-l. 6 January and 24 December are not on it, so there is no ban on those days.
The day-before rule covers only “dzień poprzedzający dzień określony w pkt 1 lit. b-j” (the day before a day in point 1 letters b-j). It does not apply before New Year’s Day (letter a) or Christmas (letter k), so 31 December and 24 December have no evening ban either.
The summer ban runs from the Friday on which school classes end to the last Sunday before they restart. Under the 2026/2027 school calendar that is 25 June to 29 August 2027.
Poland: 2027 holidays with a ban
The 8:00-22:00 ban applies on these days in 2027:
- 1 January (Friday), New Year’s Day
- 28 and 29 March (Sunday and Monday), Easter
- 1 May (Saturday) and 3 May (Monday), Constitution Day
- 16 May (Sunday), Pentecost
- 27 May (Thursday), Corpus Christi
- 15 August (Sunday), Assumption
- 1 November (Monday), All Saints’ Day, and 11 November (Thursday), Independence Day
- 25 and 26 December (Saturday and Sunday)
The 18:00-22:00 day-before ban applies on 27 March, 30 April, 2 May, 15 May, 26 May, 14 August, 31 October and 10 November 2027.
Poland: exemptions
The full list is in § 3 of the regulation. The ones that matter most for international hauls:
| Exemption | Condition | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Live animals | no extra conditions | § 3(1) point 3 |
| Perishable food | goods from Annex 1 making up a large share of the load | § 3(1) point 3 |
| Dangerous goods | loads that require orange plates | § 3(1) point 3 |
| Combined transport | also goods unloaded at a rail station, within 50 km of it | § 3(1) point 3 |
| Medicines, post, press, solid fuels | post and press when they make up a large share of the load | § 3(1) point 3 |
| Return from abroad | to finish a haul or deliver cargo, if the company is based in Poland | § 3(1) point 5 |
| Entry before the ban | within 50 km of the border crossing; also waiting to leave Poland | § 3(1) point 6 |
| Empty run | to collect an exempt load or after unloading it | § 3(2) |
Emergency services, rescue operations, road construction and maintenance, and continuous-production plants are exempt as well. A foreign carrier returning through Poland cannot use the return-from-abroad exemption, because it requires a company based in Poland.
Cities can set their own access limits. Łódź, for example, has restricted vehicles over 12 t since 2016 (source: trade press).
Poland: fines
The regulation itself sets no fines. A Radom road inspectorate notice reports on-the-spot fines for drivers, who were held until the ban ended, and proceedings against foreign carriers with an expected fine of 2,000 PLN plus 1,000 PLN for the transport manager.

According to trade press (trans.info), section bans include the N-230 in the Pyrenees in winter, roads out of Madrid on summer Sunday evenings and roads to the coast in July and August. With several holidays in a row, ADR stops on the first day from 8:00 to 15:00 and on the last by the Sunday rule.
ADR vehicles on long routes use the RIMP network.
Catalonia and the Basque Country issue their own resolutions. DGT issues the national resolution each year; the 2026 resolution came out in mid-January.
National holidays in 2027: 1 and 6 January, 26 March, 1 May, 15 August, 12 October, 1 November, and 6, 8 and 25 December.

Switzerland
Switzerland has a Sunday, holiday and night ban on all roads (articles 91-92 VRV, ASTRA). The weight limits come from trade press: the ban covers goods vehicles over 3.5 t, vehicles with a trailer over 3.5 t and articulated combinations over 5 t (nakordoni).

In practice the two bans combine. A truck still on the road at 22:00 on Saturday can only move again at 5:00 on Monday.
Holidays with a ban according to ASTRA: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, 1 August, Christmas Day and 26 December (unless Christmas falls on a Monday or Friday). In 2027 that means 1 January, 26 and 29 March, 6 and 17 May, and 25 December, while 1 August and 26 December fall on a Sunday.
According to ASTRA, the holiday ban does not apply in cantons where that holiday is not observed.
Switzerland: exemptions
Since 1 July 2026, transports of perishable goods and of animals are exempt from the Sunday and night bans (ASTRA). Emergency services, police, the military and recovery vehicles are exempt too, and special permits (Sonderbewilligung) cover unavoidable cases.

Truck ban exemptions: who may drive?
Most countries exempt similar groups of transports. The conditions differ in detail, and the detail decides the outcome of a roadside check.
| Exemption | Countries where it applies | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Perishable food | PL, AT, HR, CZ, FR, DE, GR, HU, IT, SK, SI, ES, CH | FR, CZ, ES: at least half of the load; AT: document per unloading point |
| Live animals | PL, HR, CZ, FR, GR, HU, IT, SK, SI, ES, CH | DE only live fish and bees; AT slaughter livestock |
| Combined transport | PL, AT, CZ, DE, HU, IT, SK | DE up to 200 km or 150 km from a port, AT up to 65 km |
| Post | PL, AT, HR, CZ, HU, SI, ES | ES: Correos Monday to Friday |
| Dangerous goods (ADR) | PL, SK | ES and PT place extra bans on ADR |
| Empty run | PL, AT, CZ, FR, DE, SI | only when linked to an exempt transport |
| Individual permit | CZ, FR, HU, IT, SK, CH | FR: apply 72 h ahead; HU: by 1 December |
How to prove an exemption
The officer at the roadside decides whether a transport is exempt. So the driver keeps documents in the cab that show it.
- Freight documents: a CMR with a description of the goods, in Austria for each unloading point.
- Certificates: ATP for reefers when using the food exemption in Spain and Italy.
- Combined transport documents: a rail or port document with the terminal address.
- Permits: a decision from the French prefect, the Czech regional authority or the Hungarian transport authority, original or copy.
Check the legal text before the trip, because the exemption list is often longer than the table.
Fines for driving during a ban
The table only shows amounts we found in legal texts or official notices, plus countries described by trade press, flagged as such.
| Country | Fine | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Poland | foreign carrier 2,000 PLN, transport manager 1,000 PLN | WITD Radom |
| Austria | 218-2,180 EUR; Tyrol A12 up to 2,180 EUR | § 99 StVO |
| Czechia | driver 4,000-10,000 CZK | § 125c Act 361/2000 |
| Germany | driver 120 EUR, keeper 570 EUR; Saturday ban 60 EUR and 150 EUR | BKatV |
| Italy | 430-1,734 EUR, documents suspended for 1-4 months | trade press |
| Luxembourg | up to 250 EUR | trade press |
| Spain | 200 EUR and up to 4 points; up to 2,000 EUR on total-ban sections | trade press |
The fine is not the only cost. A check usually ends with the truck parked until the ban is over, which pushes back the delivery and the next loading.
Yearly ban calendars for 2027
The 2027 moveable holidays are known: Good Friday on 26 March, Easter Monday on 29 March, Ascension Day on 6 May, Whit Monday on 17 May and Corpus Christi on 27 May (service-public.gouv.fr). Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May 2027.
Several countries set their ban dates in a separate act each year or before each holiday. The table shows who publishes them.
| Country | Set by the yearly act or notice | Published by |
|---|---|---|
| Austria | route calendar, A10 Tauern Saturdays | BGBl. II, WKO |

| Hungary | bridge days | annual decree |
| Italy | the whole calendar | MIT decree, usually in December |

Upcoming ban periods: 2026-2027 calendar
Around holidays, bans in several countries overlap. We cover them day by day in separate articles, and list here the periods worth planning early.
- All Saints’ Day and 11 November: 31 October-11 November 2026. Poland and France ban trucks on 1 and 11 November, and parts of Germany on 31 October or 1 November.
- Christmas and New Year: 8 December 2026-6 January 2027. Austria bans trucks on 8 December and 6 January, three German states on 6 January, Czechia and Slovakia from 24 December, and Poland, Germany, France, Austria and Czechia all ban trucks on 25 December and 1 January.
- Easter: 25-29 March 2027. Details in our article on truck driving bans at Easter.
- May Day: 30 April-9 May 2027, with Orthodox Easter on 2 May and Ascension Day on 6 May. Details in our article on truck bans around May Day.
- Pentecost and Corpus Christi: 16-27 May 2027. Details in our article on Pentecost and Corpus Christi truck bans.
- Summer: 25 June-31 August 2027. Details in our article on summer truck driving bans.
The Polish summer ban ends on 29 August 2027. Germany, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary run their summer season to 31 August, so the last weekend of August still needs a route check.
How to plan routes around bans: a dispatcher checklist
A ban rarely stops a truck in just one country. More often it shifts the delivery, the driver’s break and the next loading, so ban days belong in the plan as soon as you accept an order.
Before accepting an order
- Check every country on the route, transit included, in the rules table.
- Compare the vehicle weight with the weight limits, trailer included.
- In Germany, check the regional holidays in the states on the route.
- Find out whether the load qualifies for an exemption and which documents it needs.
While planning
- Set the delivery window so it ends before the ban starts in the delivery country.
- Combine the ban with the driver’s weekly rest if it lasts almost a full day.
- Book a spot at secure truck parking before the ban, not on the roadside.
- On Alpine routes, check the A12 and A13 in Austria and the Swiss night ban separately.
On the ban day
- Add a time buffer at the border, because queues grow before long weekends.
- Give the driver the end time of the ban in the local time of the country where the truck is parked.
- Tell the customer early if the delivery moves to the day after the ban.
How ONYX TMS helps with planning
ONYX TMS shows telematics data on the map and in the planning view. Before a long weekend you see where each vehicle with telematics is, and you move orders before the ban starts.
